The sore neck, the restless nights, the tight stomach, the feeling of being lost or just not quite right...these aren't the problems. They're the signposts. Your body is communicating that something beneath the surface needs attention.
In Zen Shiatsu and Intuitive Life Coaching, I am listening carefully not just to the words you say and how you say them, but to what is asking to be heard on a deeper level.
The idea is not to suppress symptoms to make them go quiet, it is to find out what your body or your inner voice is telling me as I work, and how that could be contributing to your symptoms.
That way, we can address what is actually going on beneath the surface, and help bring it back into balance.
This is at the heart of Traditional Chinese Medicine's Five Elements philosophy. It's a whole body-mind-spirit understanding of how we function. The connections between what's held in certain areas of your body, the emotions you carry, the way you speak, move or present yourself all point toward ways that can restore, rebalance and revitalise your energy.
Shiatsu is a hands-on therapy developed in Japan and rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine Five Elements theory. It's a physical therapy, working on the fully clothed body, but its effects come through the work on the energy channels known as meridians.
As I'm applying gentle pressure along the meridians, stagnation is released and overactivity is calmed. This encourages your body's innate ability to restore its sense of balance, flow, vitality and ease. Shiatsu regulates the nervous system and eases physical tension at a deep level.
As well as this broad range of concerns, I have completed specialist training in shiatsu approaches to migraines and sleep.
Shiatsu can help with many conditions. Among the most common:
This is not an exhaustive list. If you're unsure whether shiatsu can help with your situation, get in touch and we can talk it through.
We will begin with a chat about your health and wellbeing, what's troubling you at the moment, and any medical issues or injuries.
Shiatsu is done either on a massage table or a mat on the floor. I will do a simple check either on your tummy or back, pressing lightly on a series of zones. The quality of the energy in these zones conveys information from your body to me, indicating which meridians need attention. There is usually one which stands out as overactive and one which is too quiet, almost always two of the Five Elements. By resetting the energetic flow of these two meridians, balance is restored throughout the whole Five Element system.
After the diagnostic check, I will apply pressure at varying levels, mostly with my palms and thumbs, along the lengths of the chosen meridians, and mobilise joints with rotations and gentle movements. The pressure and pace I use will change according to the quality of the energy in the meridians as I move along them. It is a constant communication.
I'll do a brief grounding process at the end, and we'll talk about any thoughts or feelings that arose. In the days afterwards, I'd love you to message me about things that change: thoughts or emotions that come up, or any other observations. I'm in awe of the way shiatsu gets past the obvious, bypassing the busy mind to create change at deeper levels.
What appears on the surface as a problem in life is often part of a longer-held pattern, a deeply held fear or belief. You may have been carrying it for years and not recognised it. These patterns can show up as self-sabotaging behaviour, emotional or mental turmoil, or unexplained physical symptoms. They can come from limiting situations created by others, or ones we've created ourselves. Either way, they're real, and they can be resolved.
Through careful, empathic questioning and the use of the Mythic Tarot as a reflective tool, we bypass the conscious mind to discover what needs to be resolved deep in the subconscious, or on a soul level.
Key insights can emerge that help reveal and release patterns and blocks, often with associated negative or misplaced karma.
In an entirely different way to shiatsu, this brings a greater sense of balance and direction.
People often want to know about their life purpose, and there is a specific methodology for uncovering that. Life purpose is multi-faceted and evolving. It doesn't have to be one thing. The important thing is to know you're on the right path, not off on a detour of distractions.
A shift can occur in the first session. Sometimes two or three take you where you want to be.
Certified in 2020 under Joanfrances Boyle's structured therapeutic methodology. Available in person in Glasgow or online.
We'll begin with a series of questions which get to the root of the issue you want to address. It can be a single problem, but the process may reveal a long-standing pattern or block.
Then you'll choose a card from the Mythic Tarot. You may or may not trust your intuition in choosing. Trust me, you will choose the right card.
We'll identify the part of the card which holds the message you need for your situation. With this guidance and the insights that come from it, we can unravel the strands and knots that have been complicating things, obscuring your view, creating confusion or driving you to distraction.
As with shiatsu, I love it when you let me know in the following days what impact the session has had.
